The winners of the 2013 American Library Association Youth Awards were announced on January 28th. If you missed out on the reveal, here are the winners.
Newbery Award: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
"Ivan’s transformative emergence from the 'Ape at Exit 8' to 'The One and
Only Ivan, Mighty Silverback,' comes to life through the gorilla’s own
distinct narrative voice, which is filled with wry humor, deep emotion
and thought-provoking insights into the nature of friendship, hope and
humanity."
Caldecott Medal: This Is Not My Hat, written & illustrated by Jon Klassen
"In this darkly humorous tale, a tiny fish knows it’s wrong to steal a
hat. It fits him just right. But the big fish wants his hat back.
Klassen’s controlled palette, opposing narratives and subtle cues compel
readers to follow the fish and imagine the consequence."
(Laura Ingalls) Wilder Medal: Katherine Paterson
"Katherine Paterson is the winner of the 2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award honoring
an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books
have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for
children. Her numerous works include 'Bridge to Terabithia' (Crowell, 1977), 'Jacob Have I Loved' (Crowell, 1980) and 'The Great Gilly Hopkins' (Crowell, 1978)."

World Book Night 2013

There are only 5 more days to fill out your applications for
World Book Night. Don't know what World Book Night is? Where have you been? Oh,
it's such an awesome program!
World Book Night started in 2011 in the UK and Ireland and
is based on a Spanish holiday where people give a book and a flower to a loved
one. The intention is to inspire the love of reading and encourage others to
read. Last year the U.S. and Germany joined in the fun.
Thirty books are chosen each year. Applicants fill out an
application online where they choose three books from the provided list. Then,
if you are selected, a few days before April 23rd you can pick up your box of
20 books of one title at a drop site and on the 23rd you go out and give them away.
If you work at a library or bookstore you can request your
workplace be a drop site for the boxes of books (I believe the due date for
this has passed this year). Our library did this last year and we had a small party for
the people who were selected to give books away. Griffith Memorial library was
chosen again to be a drop site this year, which is really exciting. Last year I
was also selected to give away Ender's Game and I handed them out to students
on our campus.
It is such an awesome program and it really only takes a few
minutes of your time to fill out the application. It is also really fun to hand
out books to unsuspecting people!
Good luck and let me know if you got a box!

2012 Recap and Resolustions Part Deux
With the first week of 2013 in the past, I've settled into the post holiday routine and finally have time to reflect on last year. It was busy, though not as busy as my co-author's! I completed three LSSC courses, read quite a bit, watched WAY too much TV, and failed miserably at NaNoWriMo, but had a lot of fun participating. I managed to make one quilt and one afghan for Christmas presents and my own holiday cards. Now for a look back...
Runners Up:
Skyfall
Pitch Perfect
The Avengers
The Dark Knight Rises
Movies I Wish I Had Seen:
Lincoln
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Bedlam Detective centers around Sebastian Becker, a man who works for the crown investigating wealthy peoples' sanity. He finds himself embroiled in a local mystery while life at home begins to fall apart. I finished this book wholly expecting to find an entire Becker series underway, and was heartbroken to discover it's a stand alone novel. It was so good that I was willing to break my most upheld literary rule (never start a series that isn't finished - or about to be finished).
